For recording software most computer systems require musical instrument interface hardware ... especially for electric guitar because of the low level signal output. FenderSlide is an affordable addition ... an alternative method is to use a preamp (such as a mixer/amp line out or effects pedal) to boost the signal in to the computer microphone input ... the boosted signal level is usually very high going in to a computer through the mic input from most musical equipment and to avoid extreme distortion/noise turn the preamp device output volume down very low ... a 1/4" to 1/8" plugs cable adaptor can be used if required ... computers (usually notebook types) with only one mic/headphones jack require a different method ... they require a 4-connector 1/8" plug as there are 4 connections ... the tip of the plug is left speaker, the first ring after the tip is right speaker, the second ring from the tip is ground and the last ring near the base of the plug is the microphone input ... older computers may have the mic and ground rings reversed ... an individual single item 4-conductor 1/8" plug is very rare to find ... they are available online on the internet from some electronics stores ... inexpensive headphones w/mic for computers from a local retail store may have a 4-conductor 1/8" plug that can be used ... the cord can be cut off and then connected to 2 separate jacks ... one stereo jack for external speakers (jack tip - left speaker, jack ring - right speaker) and one monaural jack (or a stereo jack - connect mic to tip only - do not use stereo ring) for mic/instrument input ... there is usually two separate cables (a pair) on the cord and the cable wire color coding is as follows: speakers cable --- left speaker - blue, right speaker - green and ground for both speakers is stranded copper wire ... microphone cable --- mic - red and ground is stranded copper wire ... the stranded copper wire ground for both speakers and microphone are normally 'common' (connected together to a single ground) ...
